-William Hope Hodgeson, The House On The Borderlands

Hodgeson was an early pioneer in the field of "cosmic horror"; his 1908 novel The House On The Borderlands, about a very old manor sitting beside a massive pit which is in fact a gateway to another dimension, is generally regarded as his finest work (garnering praise from no less than H.P.L. himself in his famous essay Supernatural Horror In Literature).
